Furnace Filters

99¢ filters do not work efficiently. Look for filters that have a MERV rating. This stands for "minimum efficiency reporting value" (MERV) to describe filter performance. This is the rating of a new filter. The filter actually improves its' filtering capacity over time up to a point. Then when the filter gets clogged, filtering performance degrades and the filter should be replaced.

Don't make the mistake and change your furnace filter only at the beginning of winter. When you run your central air conditioning, you are filtering your air. Check and change your filters frequently. A clogged filter will strain the blower motor and compressor which may result in premature equipment failure.

Furnace Filter by Size:

How ofter should I change my furnace filter? Recommendations vary based on a number of factors: the type of filter that you use, how many pets you have, whether anyone in your home has allergies, etc. If you use disposable fiberglass panel filters, you should change them anywhere from once a month to once every three months. Pleated furnace filters generally last from 3 months with some up to a year.

Furnace filter page last modified 08/26/08 Some furnace manufacturers put inexpensive fiberglass furnace filters into their furnaces to remove larger airborne particles that might damage the fan and the heating coil. Particle buildup will decrease the efficiency of your furnace, as the furnace has to work harder to pull air through the clogged furnace filters. More expensive filters can also improve the air quality in your house by removing pollen, bacteria and mold spores from the air. This is especially important if you or someone in your family suffers from allergies.
